Our commitment

Rain Check should work for everyone who plans or is invited to a night out, including people who use a screen reader, a keyboard instead of a mouse, magnification, voice control, or settings that reduce motion. We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 at level AA, the standard most widely used for websites.

Rain Check is partially conformant with WCAG 2.2 level AA: we believe it meets the standard, apart from the limitations listed below. We fix problems as we find them or as people tell us about them.

What we've built in

  • Every page and every step of an invite can be used with a keyboard alone, with a visible outline showing where you are.
  • Buttons, form fields, calendars and pictures of people have names that screen readers read out, and messages such as “Saved” are announced when they appear.
  • The calendar for choosing dates works with the arrow keys, and the dates on an invite can be shown as a plain list instead of a calendar.
  • Text and controls meet WCAG's contrast levels, and answers are shown with words and outlines, not colour alone.
  • Pages work when zoomed to 400% or on a screen 320 pixels wide, without scrolling sideways, and text can be spaced out further without being cut off.
  • Buttons and links are big enough to tap, at least 24 by 24 pixels.
  • The background lightning flashes no more than twice in a row, well under the limit that can trigger seizures.
  • Nothing times out while you're using it. The only deadline is an answer-by date, which a host can choose to set for their own event.
  • Each page has its own title, and a “Skip to content” link is the first thing on every page.

Settings that can help

  • Pause animations, at the bottom of every page, stops the rain, lightning, traffic and scrolling effects. This device remembers your choice.
  • If your phone or computer is set to reduce motion, Rain Check follows that setting without you doing anything.
  • Pause live updates, on an invite's calendar page, stops the answers and vote counts from changing while you read them.
  • Your browser's zoom and text-size settings work on every page.

Known limitations

  • The city skyline at the top of the home page has a hidden game: tapping a window switches its light, and tapping the water makes a ripple. It only works with a mouse or touch. It's decorative, and nothing on the site depends on it.
  • Links to Apple Maps, Google Maps and Google Calendar open sites run by other companies, whose accessibility we don't control.
  • If a security check (a CAPTCHA) appears on the sign-in or sign-up forms, it is provided by Cloudflare. Cloudflare designs it to work with screen readers and keyboards, but we can't test every situation.

How we check

We review Rain Check ourselves; it hasn't been audited by an outside company. Each review covers every page and every step of an invite, on phone and computer screen sizes, and includes:

  • automated testing with axe-core against WCAG 2.2 level A and AA;
  • using every page with a keyboard only, checking where focus goes and that it's never hidden;
  • zooming to 400%, widening text spacing, and checking tap target sizes;
  • checking the names, roles and announcements that screen readers use; and
  • checking colour contrast for text, form fields and focus outlines.

Tell us about a problem

If something on Rain Check doesn't work for you, or you need information in a different way, email contact@nomorerainchecks.com. Tell us which page you were on and what happened, and we'll get back to you as soon as we can.

Your feedback helps us find problems our own checks miss. You can also read our Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Technical details

Rain Check is built with HTML, CSS, JavaScript and WAI-ARIA, and works in current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari on phones and computers, with the screen readers and other assistive technology those browsers support. It needs JavaScript to be turned on.
